TRADITIONAL TREATMENT OF BILIARY ATRESIA

The first course of action to treat Biliary Atresia is a Kasai Procedure, or heptaportoenterostomy, a surgery created by Dr. Morio Kasai.   Essentially, during a Kasai procedure, the surgeon removes the infected child’s gall bladder, and using a piece of the duodenum (the first ten inches of the small intestine) the surgeon connects the small intestine to the liver, creating a new common bile duct, or rather a new passageway, through which bile can flow. However, this procedure is not a curative measure in fighting the disease.  On the contrary, the procedure is only meant to maintain the child’s health a liver can be procured for transplantation.
