WHATS HAPPENING NOW…
Currently, Ella is on the waiting list for a liver with a MELD score of 25. In the past year, Ella has endured around 17 painful IR procedures to fix clogging or placement of her tubes. She is constantly in some sort of pain. She is prescribed Oxycontin and Percocet, though she frequently has to take time-released morphine to completely alleviate the pain. She is prescribed sleeping pills to help her get the rest she needs, as the tubes protruding from her chest make it difficult to get a good nights sleep. She has been hospitalized at least ten times in the past year.
Recently, Ella’s liver has turned and the scarring in her liver has become worse, creating more pools of bile in her liver and obstructing bile flow to the liver. This decreased flow, in combination with the pockets of standing bile have caused bacteria to escape the intestines and to breed in her bile ducts creating infections—this is called Cholangitis. Ella is frequently at the hospital for preventive IV antibiotics and as any singe case of Cholangitis could prove to be fatal. Each infection is weakening her physically, and the drugs are starting to catch up with her mentally.
